"-Hill experience a plus"
This was one of the qualifications listed on a posting for an internship opportunity at an organization in Washington, DC. When I first read this line, I was at first puzzled as to its meaning. What does it mean to have "hill experience" and how do I get it?
When I pondered over it, I realized that living in Washington DC, our nation's capital, is not just like living in a "place", but is rather a way of life. You are surrounded every day by the politics and happenings that otherwise you would only see on CNN or C-SPAN. Concentrated in one city are the leaders of one of the most powerful nations in the world, who meet daily and make decisions that shape all of our lives. And now I am living in the middle of it, in the middle of the "hill experience." And although I wish that this "hill experience" could somehow be obtained merely through osmosis, I know that it will take a lot more than that to obtain it.
So this is the story of my life at Georgetown University in DC, where I have set out to create my very own hill experience.
